A new era in food safety has begun with the focus on preventing contamination in the U.S. food supply rather than acting after it occurs. When the Food Safety Modernization Act is fully enacted by 2016, it will be the biggest shift in food safety policy in more than 70 years.

For food manufacturers and others involved in the production and distribution of human and animal food, the new law requires that they gear up for more stringent auditing by inspectors from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Part of the new law takes aim at pest management by giving the FDA greater power to enforce pest control measures that can reduce food contamination. Companies in the food industry have long relied on professional pest control firms like Abell Pest Control, which provide extensive services to eradicate insects and rodents from food and beverage processing, storage and transport as well as institutional food services and restaurants.

With greater FDA enforcement powers and stronger sanctions taking effect, the consequences of a pest violation is substantial. To be ready for FDA audits, which are unannounced and can occur at any time, food companies need a regular program of internal inspections, monthly reports, ongoing pest prevention efforts and immediate action if an infestation takes place.

Keeping food safe

By pinpointing where pest problems are occurring, companies can treat them with a comprehensive removal plan and and follow up with preventive steps to minimize future outbreaks. This way, food businesses are able to stop infestations before they incur fines or other punitive actions by food safety officials.

Not only will the food business be protecting its brand and reputation, but the result will be cleaner food production facilities and less chance of a contamination outbreak that could have far-reaching health outcomes for the public.

In food-making operations of packaged human and animal foods, the law requires that science-based controls be in place to prevent food-borne illnesses from harming the products. Similar measures must be used in the growing, harvesting, packing and storage of produce on farms.

For the estimated 166,000 registered food facilities overseen by the FDA, the food safety law requires them to evaluate potential hazards such as allergens and disease that could affect foods, take steps to prevent these hazards, monitor the prevention measures and report on the outcome.

"[Food facilities] must think up front about what they have to do to keep the food safe," said Michael Taylor, FDA deputy commissioner for foods.
